Graffiti + Skandiateatern = RENT

Posted at 12:40 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE, ART

This is what the facade of Skandiateatern in Norrköping now looks like, for our production of RENT.

Welcome to Alphabet City, New York. Photo: Hampus Fredriksson.

The graffiti artists have painted the inside of the theater as well, and we have rebuilt the stage to resemble a NY crossing with buildings. We have made RENT more realistic, so our version is grittier and even more touching than the original.

The opening night is sold out. For other performing nights, please book your tickets now:

I am a very very proud Music Director.

This will be an evening you will NEVER FORGET.

Online article about RENT

KULTURSIDAN.NU, the Norrköping culture news site, visited one of our rehearsals last week and just published this article. The stage will soon be finished, but it still looks very unfinished in their photos. We're getting closer to New York...

RENT will premiere on March 2nd

Posted at 15:33 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE

Finally... The opening performance of RENT will be March 2nd!

Last Wednesday we invited the producer Robin Karlsson (he is also a scenography, costume and make-up designer) and several people from the production team - costume assistants, sound engineer, light engineer, etc., for a complete run-through of Act 1 and 2. Again, several of the actors were themselves moved to tears during the performance...

We will hopefully be able to finish building the stage at the end of next week, so we at least will have 1 week of rehearsals as it is supposed to be. Until now, we are missing several vital parts of the stage (staircase, balcony, etc.) which makes us have to imagine how the final staging will look.

Here are some photos I took during one of the rehearsals. Please note there is still no props, costumes, lighting, etc.

Roger and Mimi (Olle Petersson and Linnea Källström).

At Life Cafe - La Vie Boheme.

The Support Group for people with HIV/AIDS.

I honestly hope and seriously believe that Jonathan Larson, the writer and composer of RENT, will be proud of our production as he watches it from his heaven.

I see my God in you

Rewatched another Bollywood movie last night, RAB NE BANA DI JODI (meaning A Match made by God) from 2008, starring Shah Rukh Kahn and Anushka Sharma. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.

Seemingly to 'only' be about an unhappy young wife wanting to join a dancing competition, this story develops into an surprisingly powerful and emotional journey of a love greater than life itself.

Written & directed by genius Aditya Chopra and with stunning music by brothers Salim-Sulaiman, this is as good as it gets! Here is the theme song Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai (I see my God in you), taken from the movie. At 4:41 comes the slow version with female vocals which is even more beautiful.

Enjoy, and Watch this movie!!!

Here is a trailer as well:

Rave reviews for RENT

Posted at 17:43 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, ART, THEATRE

We are getting rave reviews for RENT!!!

Note the beautiful set we have built after demolishing the stage of Skandiateatern. Me and the other four guys in the orchestra are sitting inside the building to the right.

4 out of 5 in NT

Posted at 13:45 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE

NT, Norrköpings Tidningar, published a review today of our opening performance last night, and gave it 4 out of 5 trams (the tram is the symbol of Norrköping where we are staging it).

From the Swedish review (translated into English):

"Director Johan Pettersson, backed by Musical director Johan Christher Schütz, are the creatives behind this brilliant production where duets develop into crackling ensemble numbers."

The reviewer Ann-Charlotte Sandelin was happy and moved.

Thank you NT!

I admit it. I have been Bollywood smitten. There is something extraordinary about these kind of movies, where suddenly the actors burst out in song, staged and filmed like a music video. And there is something very appealing in the colors and the choreography of these movies.

Here is the song Titli from the movie Chennai Express (2013), sung in the Tamil language, with actors Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan.

They used a shorter mix in the movie, so this video is not how it appears in the movie. I like this longer version though, so decided to put it here.

I have even added a new Category here on the blog: BOLLYWOOD!!!

RENT progress

Posted at 15:46 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE, MOVIES

Our production of RENT is doing progress, yesterday we did the whole Act 2 again, and I tell you it's difficult not to cry. The ever-growing emotion of the singers is touching to witness, especially in Act 2 with everything that goes on.

Here is "Goodbye Love" from Act 2, from the 2005 movie:

We plan to start giving preview shows at Skandiateatern in mid-February. I am proud and happy to be the music director of this show.
