Video and setlist from Ono Market

Posted at 18:02 under SETLISTS, JAPAN

My gig last weekend at Ono Market @ LIFT in Waseda's university area in central Tokyo went really great. I was very inspired and the audience was lovely.

I focused mainly on bossanova arrangements this time, and it was very suitable for the atmosphere. It was also my first time to sing my new song Beautiful Place, and people seemed to like it...

There were 2 incredibly cute babies in the audience and I was surprised at how quiet and kind they seemed! Maybe they were already used to going to concerts.

Thank you Ono-san for inviting me to perform!

Check out the "trees & flowers" arrangement at the stage, it was awesome!

Here is a video of my performance of "Aurora". Please see below for full setlist.

1. What Good Are Tears (Pra Que Chorar)
2. So Happy
3. I'm Here
4. Aurora
5. Passion
6. Balans
7. Let The Sunlight In
8. Slow Down
9. Beautiful Place
10. Jabuticaba
11. Falando de Amor

I took this photo on my way the soundcheck. It's a (I think) cherry tree with 2-colored blossoms:

R.I.P. Bebo Valdes

Posted at 16:42 under MUSIC, OTHERS

Cuban pianist BEBO VALDES has passed away aged 94. He was one of the greatest musicians ever to come from Cuba, and I just want to wish him a safe journey.

He lived in Sweden from the 1960's, and I have several friends who have worked together with him from the 1970's and onward.

One of his best albums was the amazing collaboration with flamenco singer Diego El Cigala - LAGRIMAS NEGRAS (black tears).

Thank you Bebo for all the beautiful music. Rest in peace.

Live from Swedish Radio 2005

Posted at 12:45 under MUSIC

Just found this old live recording (2005) from Swedish radio. I was invited to perform 5 songs in the SR P4 program Sommartid (Summertime). The host was Bengt Grafström, a famous Swedish radio host since many years.

It was recorded outdoors in Borgholm, Öland, and that's why you can hear seagulls in the background. I think it really creates a nice atmosphere!

(Pra Que Chorar)
Written by Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes.
English translation by me (fully authorized).

I translated this song to English for my second album BLISSA NOVA, which was released in 2007, and which contained 5 translations:

Please share!

On so-called "foreigners"

Posted at 04:50 under OTHERS, THOUGHTS, DEMOCRACY

Being a 'long-nose' is not easy anywhere, my friend Mikael Wiehe wrote to me last year regarding being a foreigner. It doesn't matter which country you go. As long as you look different or have a strange-sounding name the police, the customs officers, etc, etc, etc, will treat you with suspicion.

In Sweden, the not-so-intelligent Minister of Justice Beatrice Ask supports the police's harassment of foreign-looking people (in their search for "paperless immigrants"), and yesterday, Swedish author Jonas Hassen Khemiri wrote an open letter to her in DN, Sweden's biggest daily newspaper.

Within one day (!) it was DN's most shared article on the web ever.

Please read this. It may open your eyes to the situation of foreigners in your own country, wherever you live. Because it's the same everywhere. It's not just about the police. It's rooted in our collective consciousness, the "foreigner", the "stranger", the "weirdo", the "strange name", the "big nose", etc.

The letter google-translated into English

And unfortunately very very true.

Photos and setlist

Posted at 14:57 under MUSIC, JAPAN, SETLISTS

I just received some great photos from Masahiro Toyoshima from my gig last weekend at Tokyu Hands Cafe, HINT 7, in Shibuya.

My gig was part of the TOKYO NORTHERN LIGHTS FESTIVAL, which officially starts on Saturday (Feb 9). Check out their website here: http://www.tnlf.jp

They called it "Mini-live". I performed for 1 hour without break. Is that really MINI?

This reminds me of old photos of New York, with tall buildings in the background.

With Toyoshima-san and Mihara-san. Thank you for coming!

All photos by Masahiro Toyoshima (facebook page).

My setlist was semi-improvised towards the end, because I had to play longer than I had planned, so I threw in some extra songs and I don't remember exactly which ones.

Setlist (approximate) February 3:

1. I'm Here
2. Balans
3. What A Wonderful World (Thiele-Weiss)
4. Vem Vet (Lisa Ekdahl)
5. Difficult
6. Changes Changes
7. Det gör ingenting
8. Slow Down
9. Peace Is The Way
10. Passion
11. Triste (Jobim)
12. Luiza (Jobim)
13. This Is Forever
14. There's Only You

Here's a photo from the street level entrance:

Thanks to HINT 7, TOKYO NORTHERN LIGHTS FESTIVAL, AQUAVIT JAPAN, and all of you who dropped by to listen. It was free entry and people seemed to be sitting and standing all over the place, as there weren't enough chairs and tables for everyone.

Hope to see you all again soon!

John Pilger

Posted at 15:28 under THOUGHTS, DEMOCRACY

JOHN PILGER is an amazing Australian journalist, and his documentaries are wonderful proof of his passion to show a truth that we many times are not supposed to know about, a truth which our governments don't want us to know.

With the internet, people all over the world have more access to information than ever before in history, and the fact that many of John's documentaries are available on youtube is wonderful news for all of us who long to hear the truth.

Read more about him here:

or on his website;

Here are two of his documentaries (in English, no subtitles).

Please watch them. The awakened awareness may change your life. At the very least, it will open your eyes.

The New Rulers of the World -
Showing the secrets behind globalization, and the growing gap between rich and poor.

War by other means -
Showing how the lifestyle of us in the rich countries is actually paid for by the poor countries.

Spring blossom

Posted at 15:36 under ART, JAPAN

Today I found pink and white blossoms on trees in a park in central Tokyo, and it surprised me that seeing them made me so happy! Must be because of the cold winter...

It's too early to be cherry, so I thought they were both plum trees, just in different colors. However, the flowers are also totally different:

Is this Peach?

This must be Plum.

Then, I HAVE TO include this photo too, of an old house that's falling apart. When I first passed, I thought it was deserted like many old houses are in the middle of Tokyo, but when I went back in the evening, there was actually a light in one of the windows.

Tower Records book

Posted at 04:17 under MUSIC, ART, JAPAN

My album Passion was recently included in a new book from TOWER RECORDS JAPAN, introducing albums suitable for picnics and weekend trips, on the theme Jazz for Women:

Here's the picnic page with Passion on the right:

The album cover was also included on the index page, so I'm really happy and thankful!

And here is a photo I took earlier at Tower Records Shibuya here in Tokyo, with my friend ROMAN ANDRN's albums just next to mine. It's taken after they rebuilt the whole shop, so I'm happy they still chose to keep all my albums on the shelves, as they aren't keeping most albums in the store any more.

Tower Records, Arigatou Gozaimasu!
