From a beach in France

Posted at 15:11 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE, ART

Spending a week in France to rest and get ready for my next big project. This photo was taken at Île d'Oleron on the Atlantic coast during last weekend.

So, what's this new project?

Well, I am very happy to announce that I have been authorised to finish writing a musical based on a Swedish book published in 2013, which has already been translated into several other languages as well as being made into a play.

The writer said she loved my first four songs and I was given the green light to complete the musical. It will be a concept musical, which does not have a typical linear narrative, and I hope to share more details in a near future.

And to be honest, it's not really new to me. I started trying to write songs over a year ago, and it's just taken this long to get to know the characters well enough to be able to write in their different voices.

I have a really good feeling about this, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. First things first. Back to the synopsis and breaking down of the scenes. The music will come by itself.

Time and musicals and not much else

Posted at 13:21 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THOUGHTS, DEMOCRACY

Time flies. It's been 6 months since I posted anything here, and it's mostly due to the reason I haven't had time to create much of interest to post.

However, yesterday I had a very promising meeting with a British actor and writer who is very interested in being the bookwriter for my Japan-themed musical. He has already come up with some great ideas, and we really seem to be on the same page.

The musical has an important subject that we both are passionate telling the world about, so you can expect more updates on this later this summer. We're both busy with other things, but hopefully some time will open up to finally get this musical off the ground.

I'm also constantly writing songs for the weekly BML songwriting workshop, and that takes most of my spare time, not leaving a single moment to think of my own projects or musicals. We will have the whole month of August off this workshop, so that will hopefully be a blessed time for me to get some of my own writing done.

I am very happy with my new vegan lifestyle. It's over 8 months now, and I feel healthier than ever. Sure, I was a vegetarian for 20 years, so it was an easy transition.

I guess you could call me a Vegan Abolitionist.

Almost 10 years ago, a clairvoyant told me I lived a previous life in Brazil and that I was killed while I was fighting for the abolition of slavery.

So I guess it all makes sense. My love for human and animal rights, the country and culture of Brazil, the language, the music. It was all already in me.

Lots of love.

Librettist wanted for Japan-themed musical

Posted at 14:25 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE, JAPAN

My Japan-themed musical Peach has been selected for a pitching slot for next years BEAM:2016 showcase of new musical theatre writing.

So I am looking for a librettist to help me reform and rewrite the libretto and the dialogues. It's preferable with someone with insight and understanding of Japanese/East Asian culture as I'm very very eager to avoid Asian sterotypes.

Peach is a 'modern-day Cinderella' set mostly in Japan to the backdrop of the financial crisis.

I write music and lyrics. I've written loads of songs for this show, 2 hours to be exact but I understand the lyrics needs to be rewritten as we rewrite the book, and it definitely needs new songs, more natural ensemble numbers, etc, as 20 of the songs I've already written need to be cut.

However, I really believe in this musical, and so did the jury selecting it to be one of the shows to have a 10-minute pitch slot on 4 November at Park Theatre, London.

Here is a demo reel, with old lyrics:

Librettist wanted for "honour" culture musical

Posted at 14:10 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE, BOLLYWOOD

I am looking for a Playwright/Librettist to collaborate with on a musical (that is in some way) about South Asian "honour" violence and/or women's rights/equality.

Preferably someone with insight in, for example, Indian/Pakistani culture and traditions, as I intend to compose music with that flavour.

Bollywood-inspired, but has to be unpredictable.

Is that you?

Hiba Tawaji - Al Rabih Al Arabi

Posted at 17:56 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, OTHERS, DEMOCRACY

Hiba Tawaji is an awesome singer from Lebanon. Check this new song out. It's amazing - her voice, the song itself, and the haunting music video.

It's a masterpiece. The best song I have heard for a very long time.

Enough with hate and genocide now.

Seriously.

We must stop thinking in terms of "us" and "them".

Or it will never stop.

RENT

Posted at 17:53 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE

The experience of working with Jonathan Larson's RENT (as a Music director, Conductor and Piano player) has really been a journey for me. We spent five months together with Angel, Mimi, Maureen, Joanne, Mark, Roger, Collins and Benny and the ensemble, and it's been among the best five months of my life.

I gave two newspaper interviews about RENT towards the end of the run.

One for Corren which you can read here in Swedish, and here in Google's auto-translated English.

The other was for Lokaltidningen, which you can read here in Swedish or with Bing's help in auto-translated English, as google translation messes up the layout on this website. Each of the three times my full name is included, it's translated differently: "John Paul" (!), "Johan David" and "Johan Martin".....

Ain't that pretty inexplicable!? (^.^)

And in Swedish, the word Rent can mean "Clean" or "Pure", so there are some mistranslations of the title itself (^.^)

I'm currently doing research and planning for a couple of new ideas for musicals that I have, and will soon start writing. I haven't written music for months now and I'm eager to get started...

Here is a photo of the RENT ensemble, including me (in the top left corner with two of the other musicians, and the director Johan is in the bottom right corner.

Graffiti + Skandiateatern = RENT

Posted at 12:40 under MUSIC, MUSICAL, THEATRE, ART

This is what the facade of Skandiateatern in Norrköping now looks like, for our production of RENT.

Welcome to Alphabet City, New York. Photo: Hampus Fredriksson.

The graffiti artists have painted the inside of the theater as well, and we have rebuilt the stage to resemble a NY crossing with buildings. We have made RENT more realistic, so our version is grittier and even more touching than the original.

The opening night is sold out. For other performing nights, please book your tickets now:

I am a very very proud Music Director.

This will be an evening you will NEVER FORGET.

Online article about RENT

KULTURSIDAN.NU, the Norrköping culture news site, visited one of our rehearsals last week and just published this article. The stage will soon be finished, but it still looks very unfinished in their photos. We're getting closer to New York...
